Military Appreciation Month Essay Contest

Student Essay Contest Rules

All students attending public, private, or home school in Escambia County are eligible to submit one entry in the Essay Contest. Students who have won in the past year are not eligible this year but may apply next year.

Essays will be judged and prizes will be awarded in four categories:
Category I   – Students in grades K-2;
Category II  – Students in grades 3- 6;
Category III – Students in grades 7-9;
Category IV – Students in grades 10-12.*

Category I – Using the provided template, design a new Squadron Patch for the Blue  Angels Flight Demonstration Team.
Category II – If you were to choose a career in the military, what would you want to be and why?
Category III & Category IV – Complete the provided Essay Questionnaire from the National Flight Academy. (A total of four essay questions of between 300 and 500 words each are required.)

Category I – Students will use the provided template to design their patch.
Category II – Students will write an essay using the guidelines of “Florida Writes!”
*There is no minimum or maximum word count.
Categories III & IV – Students will use the provided questionnaire.

An Award Luncheon will be held at the National Flight Academy on board NAS Pensacola. Contest winners and one guest will be treated to a free lunch by the Military Appreciation Month Committee. Additional guests may purchase their own lunch. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive certificates of achievement and prizes. Winners unable to attend will be able to pick up their prizes after the awards luncheon.

Categories III & IV – First-place winners will receive a scholarship to participate in a 5 1/2 day program on board the Ambition at the National Flight Academy (NFA) in Pensacola, Florida (a value of $1,250).*

Create your patch or essay. Complete, sign and date the entry form and attach it to your artwork/essay. Please put the entry form on top of your work.

Submit the entry form and your artwork/essay to the Greater Pensacola Chamber. Late entries will not be considered.

A selection committee comprised of personnel from local military and civilian communities will judge all entries.

Winners will be notified in late May.

*Additional Information for Categories III & IV: First-place winners in each of these categories must meet the requirements of the NFA for participation. They must be incoming grades 7 through 12, no older than age 17, as of June 1.

Please visit for more information and listing of program dates. A representative of the NFA will contact the winner to schedule their week at the Ambition. There is no cash value for the NFA Scholarship, and it is non-transferable. Non-winners may complete the additional requirements listed on for consideration of future scholarship opportunities.
